Home based, with travel to the BFBA headquarters at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. NB Applicants are invited on both an employed or freelance basis.

The British Farriers and Blacksmiths Association (BFBA) is a trade body which exists to represent the professional farrier whilst supporting and enabling our farriery and blacksmithing members throughout their career.

The BFBA is seeking a proactive Editor for their two publications, Forge Magazine and Forge Knowledge. As Editor, your role will be to strengthen the relationship with farriers and blacksmiths through the production of these two magazines.  The role covers journal production, including commissioning, writing, editing and layout, to then provide the printer with a print-ready pdf.  

Forge Magazine is typically circa 40 pages and Forge Knowledge (farrier science/blacksmith skills CPD magazine) is up to 12 pages. They are published 6 times a year (January, March, May, July, September, and November).

Key responsibilities

  • Content production – commissioning, subbing, editing and occasionally writing pieces.

  • Collaborating with the editorial panel, executive committee, farriers and blacksmiths.

  • Attending events, particularly the Association’s main event, BFBA Focus, a 3-day event that is held in October at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire.

  • Attending meetings, these are sometime held on zoom in the evenings/at weekends.

  • Assist in the maintenance of the BFBA website.

  • Edit content generated for web, email and social media as required.

Essential skills

  • Good editing skills and ability to produce quality work.

  • Confidence in dealing with contributors.

  • Attention to detail – style, grammar, scientific accuracy, proof-reading, layout, etc.

  • Collaborate with the editorial panel, the BFBA, the industry and individuals to encourage submission of relevant editorial content.

  • Layout and production of the magazines to provide the printer with a print-ready PDF.

  • An interest in horse welfare, farriery and blacksmithing would be a distinct advantage.

  • Flexibility is essential to meet print deadlines.

  • English language proficiency.

Desirable skills 

  • Editing and layout of STEM-based topics in Forge Knowledge.

  • Direct experience working with Adobe software (Indesign, Photoshop, etc) or similar software.

  • Working knowledge of WordPress, or a willingness to learn.

  • Demonstrable working knowledge of social media to include Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn.
