The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) has three campuses In Northern Ireland and offers full-time and part-time courses to educate new entrants and support staff working within the agri-food and rural sectors.   CAFRE, Enniskillen Campus is located in in Co Fermanagh and is the only college in the island of Ireland that offers equine courses from BSc Honours to Certificates and Apprenticeships. Our aim is to assist the development of a competitive equine industry and give our students an insight into the many different local and international equine-related opportunities available.

Facilities

As our ethos is “learning by doing” we have a strong practical dimension to all our courses. We  are very proud of our experienced staff and world class facilities. We have a number of enterprises which include breeding (Thoroughbred and Sport Horse), racing, equitation and farriery. These facilities demonstrate the best management practices and utilise the most up to date technology to support learning, business management, performance and of course horse welfare. Students are involved in all aspects of these enterprises and regularly compete in point-to-point races and other equine competitions.

Higher Education Courses:

BSc (Hons) Degree in Equine Management

The Honours Degree in Equine Management, validated by Ulster University, aims to produce motivated graduates who can understand and apply modern scientific and management principles in an ever-changing equine industry. Students will be equipped to carry out a range of practical and managerial activities in equine and non-equine enterprises.

Foundation Degree in Equine Management

The Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Equine Management, validated by Ulster University, is unique within the island of Ireland. The course that has been developed in consultation with the equine industry to meet their needs, aims to produce motivated graduates with practical and managerial skills and the ability to make sound judgements in all aspects of managing an equine enterprise.

Certificate of Higher Education in Equine Science and Management

Certificate of Higher Education in Equine Science and Management, validated by Ulster University, is taught exclusively online. You can study from anywhere in the world and fit your learning around your current professional and personal life. Developed in consultation with the equine industry, the course provides up to date theories and principles relevant to equine science and business management practices. 

Further Education Courses:

Level 3 in Equine Management

This Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma course provides excellent preparation for those wishing to pursue a career in the equine industry or progress onto higher education. The course is taught using the practical facilities at Enniskillen Campus. 

Farriery Upskilling Programme

The Farriery Upskilling Programme is for working farriers, to allow them to gain The Worshipful Company of Farriers Diploma (DipWCF), which is taught part-time. The course is designed to produce qualified professional farriers who are competent in all aspects of hoof care including the selection fit and application of horseshoes. The course is delivered just over two years and students attend tutorials (forge work and classroom) two days a month. 

Level 2 in Equine Care

This practical Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care offers young people the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills required for jobs within the equine sector. The course is taught using the practical facilities at Enniskillen Campus. 

Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of Horse Care and Management

This is a 1st4Sport accredited course that will be delivered via blended learning using online lectures, video meetings and an exam at Greenmount Campus, Antrim. Class will take place on Tuesday evenings, beginning on 25th January 2022, from 7–9pm over 13 weeks. Participants will be expected to attend class via video call, each week and will therefore need an internet connection.

Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horse Care

The Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horse Care is an accredited Level 2 qualification. The course will be delivered via blended learning using online lectures, video meetings and an exam at Greenmount Campus, Antrim. 

Apprenticeships:

Level 3 Apprenticeship in the Equine Industry

Completing the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Equine Industry programme will develop your knowledge and skills necessary to complete your British Horse Society (BHS) Stage 3 qualification. This course provides training and an industry recognised qualification for students working in a diverse range of roles within the industry including horse grooms, riding centre employees and racing yard grooms and riders. 

Level 2 Apprenticeship in the Equine Industry

Completing an Apprenticeship programme will develop your knowledge and skills necessary to complete your British Horse Society (BHS) Stage 2 qualification.
