University Centre Bishop Burton (UCBB) and Bishop Burton College, based in East Yorkshire, has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the finest land-based colleges and providers of equine courses anywhere in the country.

The college runs equine apprenticeships and further education courses, whilst the University Centre Bishop Burton delivers a wide range of degree programmes covering all aspects of the industry, with an outstanding track record of student success.

The world class Equine Centre includes the impressive Bishop Burton Therapy Centre with water treadmill, CET equine spa, solarium and Zamar, Rider Fitness and Performance Suite, three indoor arenas, one complete with gallery seating for 500 spectators and a café, plus four outdoor arenas and stabling for over 100 horses.  

Specialist equipment includes Quintic gait analysis software, FLIR thermal imaging cameras, Polar heart rate monitors, Televet ECG, Synchronicity rein tension gauges, Noldus Observe XP software and extensive laboratory equipment.  

Bishop Burton Equine Centre hosts an extensive range of regional, national and international competitions, demonstrations and clinics, and is a BHS training and examination centre. Equine students gain experience by working alongside the tutors and instructors at these events, developing the practical skills needed to work in industry.

Degree Programmes

FdSc Applied Equine Management (Coaching)

This programme will enable students to develop capable practical equine management skills as well as provide sound academic knowledge in order to promote equine health and performance in both the commercial and competition setting. You will be able to tailor the focus of your degree through elective modules to studying either a coaching or therapy-based pathway.

FdSc Applied Equine Management (Therapy)

This programme will enable students to develop capable practical equine management skills as well as provide sound academic knowledge in order to promote equine health and performance in both the commercial and competition setting. You will be able to tailor the focus of your degree through elective modules to studying either a coaching or therapy-based pathway.

BSc (Hons) Equine Business Management

This programme provides an in-depth specialist business understanding of the equine industry with a thorough study of business management and operations procedures.

BSc (Hons) Equine Science

This broad-based equine science course provides an in-depth specialist understanding of the horse through study of the applied scientific principles and practice of horse management.

BSc (Hons) Equine Sports Science and Coaching

The programme benefits from state-of-the-art equine facilities to ensure graduates are fully equipped with knowledge of scientific principles of sport science, coaching, fitness and training to develop performance in equestrian sports.

BSc (Hons) Equine Therapy and Rehabilitation

This programme will prepare graduates with excellent therapeutic practical skills and rehabilitation strategies to implement based on in depth assessment and apply academic knowledge to provide sound justification of ideas.

Further Education Courses and Apprenticeships

Access to Higher Education Diploma in Land-Based Studies – Equine

Access to Higher Education courses are designed to prepare students aged 19+ for a Foundation Degree programme. This course is for students with a passion for working with horses and develops the practical skills and knowledge needed to progress into Higher Education.

Level 3 in Equine Management

Are you looking to develop an active equestrian career that includes riding, teaching, equine science and therapy? This course will provide you with practical applied experience for all units.

Whilst studying the Level 3 in Equine Management you will have the opportunity to tailor units to your particular area of interest, with pathways focusing on rehabilitation and therapy or equitation and coaching.

Level 3 Senior Equine Groom Apprenticeship

As an apprentice, you will provide and co-ordinate the day-to-day care of horses. You will lead by example and be able to implement effective systems of work. You will earn a wage and be released to study during your working week.

Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care

This course has been developed for ambitious people wishing to pursue a career within the equine industry, providing students with an excellent opportunity to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of horse care and or riding through a mix of practical, classroom and work-based study.

Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship

As an apprentice, you will work alongside experienced staff, gain job-specific skills, knowledge and behaviours within the equine industry. You will earn a wage and be released to study during your working week.
