Established in 1893, ARU Writtle (previously Writtle University College) is set in around 100 hectares of beautiful Essex countryside, ten minutes from the city of Chelmsford and 35 minutes from central London.
As one of the leading providers of equine education in the UK, ARU Writtle provides students with hands-on learning experiences using extensive equine facilities, taught by industry experts. ARU Writtle benefits from fantastic links with industry partners, including leading studs and associations including the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants (IAABC and the Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners (RAMP).

University Level courses Include:
Equine Veterinary Physiotherapy degree
This innovative four year programme of study focuses exclusively on the equine species. It enables students to progress through a high-quality undergraduate programme directly into a fourth year at master’s level, graduating with an MVetPhys in Veterinary Physiotherapy.
Based in the Equine Training and Development Centre, home to around 70 horses and state-of-the-art equipment, you’ll develop the expert clinical autonomy, research skills and professional readiness for a successful career in improving equine health and performance. This course is accredited by the Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners (RAMP) and the Animal Health Professions' Register (AHPR).
Equine Therapy, Rehabilitation and Performance
Discover how to support the overall health, wellbeing and performance of horses at ARU Writtle, and qualify as an equine sports massage therapist during this three year course. Gain in-depth knowledge of equine anatomy, biomechanics and performance, with hands-on training in massage and therapeutic techniques. Through case studies and interdisciplinary learning, you’ll develop the skills to assess, treat and support equine athletes alongside vets and other professionals, leading to a recognised qualification and a rewarding equine-focused career.

This three year part-time course is designed for those already working in the industry who want to make a meaningful impact in animal health and rehabilitation.

College Level courses and apprenticeships Include:
If you have a passion for animals and are interested in caring for horses, this course could be for you. During the course, you will learn the fundamentals of caring for and working with horses, including assisting with movement and handling, grooming and washing, preparing and maintaining animal accommodation and maintaining the health of horses. You will also cover personal development and employment modules such as organisational, presentation, and problem solving skills.
Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care
This course will enable you to develop your practical skills in riding or stud work, reinforced by the study of equine theory. This course is more practical and less academic than some of the other courses.
The course has been developed to provide a flexible approach to study, combining interactive vocational units with those designed to enhance learning and employability. In addition to topics relevant to the Equine Pathway, you will also learn key skills required for future study or employment such as preparing for an interview and essential interview skills, and searching for a job.
Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Equine Management
This qualification is for you if you want to work with horses. It provides you with a range of specialist technical and practical knowledge which will equip you to seek employment or further learning and training within the equine industry.
Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Equine Management
The course is designed for those that want to work within the equine industry either hands-on with horses or within the wider allied equine service or business sector. This course also gives you the opportunity to progress onto Higher Education if desired. It includes a study unit on business management in the land-based industries.
Equine Groom – Level 2 Apprenticeship
This level 2 apprenticeship has been specifically designed by employers to meet the needs of industry and provide you with the skills and knowledge to succeed in your industry.
Senior Groom – Level 3 Apprenticeship
The Senior Equine Groom is designed for those wishing to progress their career in the equine industry to work towards taking on more responsibility in the workplace.
