The National Stud is a global leader in the provision of thoroughbred education, offering opportunities to learn about all aspects of the bloodstock industry. The unique programmes are open to those with no experience through to those who already work with thoroughbreds. Education is at the core of our business at The National Stud, with our graduates being employed by leading breeding enterprises across the world.

Level 3 Stud Management and Sales Consignment Course

A 26-week residential course offering learners the exciting opportunity to experience the whole stud year via vocational education and a complimentary Evening Lecture Programme. Successful completion leads to a 1st4Sport Level 3 Certificate in Thoroughbred Stud Practices, 1st4Sport Level 3 Award in the Principles of Transporting Horses for Long Journeys and certificates in First Aid and Manual Handling.
Term 1: September – December: Learn how to prepare yearlings, mares and foals for the sales, from exercising yearlings to presenting to potential buyers. Experience working at the sales first hand through the completion of a placement with a consignor at the October and December sales.
Term 2: January – April: Gain first hand experience of the breeding season by foaling foaling down mares, caring for The National Stud’s exciting roster of stallions and assisting in the covering shed. Practical stud work is complemented by rotation through the Stud and Nominations office, veterinary rounds and trips, management training and career mentoring.
Non-residential Part Time Level 3 courses and work-based qualifications are also available.

Entry to Stud Employment Programme

The Entry to Stud Employment Programme is fully funded 8-week residential programme which provides practical work-based training for individuals who wish to pursue a career in the Thoroughbred industry but are lacking relevant experience. On completion, students who have achieved the required standard will have an interview for a minimum 6-9 month paid position at a UK Thoroughbred Stud Farm to gain further experience and complete the industry recognised Level 2 Diploma in Word-based Racehorse Care (Breeding Option). This qualification is also available in the workplace, with the support of qualified and experienced Assessors to ensure the programme is tailored around you working day.
