Established in 1893, Writtle University College is set in around 100 hectares of beautiful Essex countryside, ten minutes from the city of Chelmsford and 35 minutes from central London. 

We are pleased to confirm that Writtle University College and ARU (Anglia Ruskin University) are joining together. The merger will happen during the 23/24 academic year. Writtle's full range of Higher and Further Education courses will continue to be delivered on site at the Writtle campus, enhanced by resources available at nearby ARU.

As one of the leading providers of equine education in the UK, the University College provides  students with hands-on learning experience, through extensive equine facilities, taught by industry experts. We enjoy fantastic links with industry partners, including leading studs and associations including the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants (IAABC and the Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners. 

Our specialist equine resources include the following:  

  • Three large indoor riding arenas

  • Two therapy barns

  • Floodlit ménage

  • Water treadmill and solarium

  • Mechanical horse

  • Horsewalker

  • A variety of stabling facilities

University Level courses Include:

MVetPhys Veterinary Physiotherapy

This course is an innovative four year programme of study, which allows students to progress through a high quality course at undergraduate level directly into a fourth year at masters level, finishing with an MVetPhys Veterinary Physiotherapy which is the first Integrated Masters (MVetPhys) in the UK accredited by the Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners (RAMP).

BSc (Hons) Equine Behavioural Science

This degree programme at Writtle University College offers you the opportunity to pursue a specialist interest in the field of equine behaviour.

BSc (Hons) Equine Performance and Business Management

This programme incorporates the key themes of applied science, development of specialist practical skills, management skills for various enterprises and business skills for all aspects of the equine industry. 

BSc (Hons) Equine Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation

This course provides students with an exceptional knowledge of many aspects of sport horse performance. Including detailed levels of anatomy & physiology, and factors affecting performance such as saddlery, farriery and biomechanics.

BSc (Hons) Equine Bioveterinary Science

Equine Bioveterinary Science is aimed at those individuals who are interested to acquire a sound knowledge of biological and veterinary sciences applied to the horse.

BSc (Hons) Equine Performance Science

This course is aimed at those individuals who wish to support their interest in the equine athlete, with a robust grounding in scientific principles relevant to the industry.

College Level courses and apprenticeships Include:

Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Equine Management

This qualification is for you if you want to work with horses. It provides you with a range of specialist technical and practical knowledge which will equip you to seek employment or further learning and training within the equine industry.

Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Equine Management

This course is for you if you want to work within the equine industry either hands-on with horses or within the wider allied equine service or business sector. This course also gives you the opportunity to progress onto Higher Education if desired.

Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Management

This course will enable you to develop your practical skills in riding or stud work, reinforced by the study of equine theory. This course is more practical and less academic than some of the other courses.

Equine Groom – Level 2 Apprenticeship

This level 2 apprenticeship has been specifically designed by employers to meet the needs of industry and provide you with the skills and knowledge to succeed in your industry.

Senior Groom – Level 3 Apprenticeship

The Senior Equine Groom is designed for those wishing to progress their career in the equine industry to work towards taking on more responsibility in the workplace.
